CES needs your help! There are so many ways to get involved as a volunteer, tutor, mentor, teacher liaison, parent assistant and site coordinator. Your time is the biggest gift to CES.

 

Become a Mentor

Mentoring is one of the most meaningful ways you can volunteer because you can significantly impact the life of a young person. No special skills are needed, only the willingness to care and spend time with someone who needs you. CES Mentoring Eligibility Requirements:

  • Must be 21 years old and have completed high school or the equivalent
  • Employed, retired or engaging in academic studies at an accredited institution
  • Submit an application and two letters of reference
  • Participate in a short interview with program director
  • Pass a criminal background check
  • Participate in a series of mentor training workshops
  • Make a one-year commitment to mentoring a student

Tutor

 

The CES Tutor is a part-time position that serves as the direct provider of educational assistance to participating students. All Tutors will be trained for two (2) weeks on the CES approach to learning and mentoring skills.

Tutors will report Monday - Thursday, after school from 3:30-5:30pm during the fall, spring and summer semesters. Specifically, Tutors will help:

  • Individually tutor students (reinforcing their daily course curriculum) each day of the program
  • Mentor students through Social and Life Skill development exercises
  • Assist Teacher Liaisons in assessing student reading and math skills
  • Assist Teacher Liaisons in developing special instructional plans for low-achieving students

Teacher Liaison

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

 

Capitol Educational Support (CES) teacher liaisons are experienced teachers at our partner primary and secondary schools who assist in the operation and evaluation of our after school and summer programs. Teacher liaisons provide assistance to CES staff in the areas of program monitoring and evaluation, resource development and coordination, curriculum design, and tutor training support.

 

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

Program Monitoring and Evaluation

  • Serve as an on-site educational consultant to site coordinator and tutors at least four afternoons per week
  • Administer individual assessments of students' reading and math skills
  • Analyze and summarize students' IEPs, standardized test scores, report cards, and attendance
  • Assist staff with the distribution, collection, and analysis of parent, student, and tutor survey
  • Assist with performance evaluations of tutors and volunteers

Resource Development & Coordination

  • Arrange for adequate school classroom space to meet instructional needs after-school and in the summer
  • Help CES staff convene school-and neighborhood-based task forces to assess and help coordinate out of-school-time programming

Curriculum Design

  • Attend quarterly meetings of a curriculum advisory committee to the youth program
  • Help CES revise and enhance daily after-school tutoring and summer program schedules
  • Research and recommend activities and curriculum resources

Tutor Training and Support

  • Help design and implement a pre-service and ongoing training program for tutors and volunteers
  • Lead individual coaching sessions for tutors and volunteers in need of additional assistance
  • Develop special instructional plans for low-achieving students and their tutor

EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

 

At least one year teaching experience in Special Education preferred, BA in Education preferred, bilingual a plus

 

REPORTING TO
Teacher Liaisons report to CES Site Coordinators.


Parent Assistant

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

 

Capitol Educational Support (CES) Parent Assistants are mothers and fathers of participating students who commit (on a part-time basis) to help tutor and mentor CES children. They assist CES tutors and mentors during normal program days and while on occasional field trips.

Parent Assistants provide help to CES staff in the areas of student monitoring, tutor support and evaluation input.

 

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Serve as an on-site assistant to CES tutors, Teacher Liaisons and Site Coordinators
  • Directly assist tutors and her/his daily activities with students
  • Monitor and counsel student behavior during the program day
  • Assist staff with the distribution and collection of parent, student, and tutor surveys
  • Support staff with daily administrative duties
  • Attend quarterly meetings of a curriculum advisory committee to the youth program

QUALIFICATIONS

 

Parent of CES student preferred, bi-lingual a plus.
